  • 5 voted Advanced Beginner for the Birthing version - has a more solid foundation in basic sewing skills and is ready to tackle slightly more complex projects but still requires some guidance and practice.
  • 9 voted Intermediate for both Birthing and Binding versions - has a solid foundation in sewing skills and techniques, capable of tackling a variety of sewing projects with increasing complexity.

INTRODUCTION

This pattern first came onto my radar about two years ago, thanks to the many members who believed in me and trusted me to bring such a design to life.  It wasn’t until much later that I was able to fully realize its potential.

For many years, I quietly struggled with depression — a battle I didn’t even recognize until it became overwhelming. The road to recovery was long and often lonely, but with the support of a few dear friends, the unwavering encouragement from the SCD community, and the help of medication and oil therapy, I emerged stronger and more grounded.

Today, I’m incredibly proud and excited to introduce one of the biggest patterns in my design collection: the Sewfisticated Taylor Convertible Duffle Bag — a versatile zip-down duffle that doubles as a garment bag.  This pattern is a true labor of love and marks a deeply meaningful milestone in my creative journey.

There are two versions of this pattern: Binding and Birthing, sold separately due to the differences in construction steps and pattern pieces — particularly in the side gussets.  While the interior and exterior body remain the same, the key distinction between the two lies in how the side gussets are constructed.

If you're an advanced beginner, the Birthing version is the better choice, as it requires no binding and offers a more approachable sewing experience.

The Binding version involves more advanced techniques, with the main challenges being the side gusset zipper pocket and the shoe compartment.  While it may take more effort, the finished result is incredibly satisfying and professionally polished.

Exterior:

  • One panel features a zipper pocket
The other panel features a slip pocket and doubles up as a luggage sleeve

Side Gussets:

  • Two zipper pockets for added storage
  • D-ring for attaching a detachable strap
  • Cover clip to secure the zipper pulls in place

Interior:

  • A wide zipper pocket for your essentials
  • A suit compartment designed to hold your clothing, including space for a clothes hanger
  • Side mesh pocket(s) for added organization and easy access

Binding Version:

  • Includes a shoe compartment and a side gusset zip-down compartment with a mesh pocket

Birthing Version:

  • Features side gussets with zipper pockets for easy access and functionality

A key feature of this duffle bag is its ability to unzip completely flat, making packing and storage a breeze.  For added peace of mind, it includes an optional cover clip to conceal the zipper pulls.  You can easily incorporate a simple anti-theft system by using a zipper pull with a hook, paired with another pull featuring a hole.  This small yet effective detail provides extra security while you're on the go — especially useful during travel.

Pair it with the Sewfisticated Sling Strap for a comfortable and stylish carry, perfect for travel or everyday use.

This pattern includes several pieces that span multiple A4/Letter-sized pages, most of which are rectangular.  Lining pieces are marked with FOLD - you can either fold the fabric along the indicated line or print and tape two copies together if preferred.  Only the exterior includes a full pattern piece, as folding vinyl along the center is often challenging.

As with my other patterns, I’ve included a measurement cut list and piece tag labels for your convenience. All pattern pieces are also available in the A0/projector files for easier cutting and customization, along with comprehensive video tutorials to guide you through a smooth sewing process.
