From 30 Unpicked Zipper Pouches to 50+ Sewing Patterns
Five years ago, if someone had told me that I would one day design more than 50 sewing patterns, build a worldwide community of bag makers and eventually start my own bag-making supplies business...
I would have laughed.
Back then, I was simply trying to sew one zipper pouch properly.

Where It All Began
In mid-2018, I was a mum completely obsessed with JuJuBe, Tokidoki, babywearing and custom bags.
I admired the creativity behind every design and loved how different fabrics could transform a simple bag into something truly unique. The more I admired them, the more I wanted to understand how they were made.
Eventually, curiosity got the better of me, and I signed up for a four-day express sewing course.
Little did I know that one decision would completely change the course of my life.
The course introduced me to the basics, but once it ended, I realised how much I still didn't know.
YouTube became my teacher.
Late nights became my classroom.
Every project became another lesson.
There were no shortcuts.
Just persistence.
The 30 Zipper Pouches I'll Never Forget
My first month of sewing was... frustrating. 🤣
I must have unpicked more than 30 zipper pouches because I simply could not understand how right sides together and wrong sides together worked.
Every time I thought I had finally figured it out, I turned the project right side out only to realise I had sewn something the wrong way.
Back to the seam ripper.
Again.
As if that wasn't enough, the vintage Singer sewing machine I owned at the time wasn't really built for bag making. It handled thinner apparel fabrics reasonably well but struggled whenever I introduced the thicker layers needed for bags.
Looking back now, those zipper pouches taught me far more than sewing.
They taught me patience.
Persistence.
And that every mistake is simply another step towards getting it right.

From Sewing Bags to Designing Them
Once I finally understood the basics, there was no turning back.
I completely fell in love with making custom bags.
What started as a hobby quickly became an obsession. I spent countless evenings and weekends sewing, experimenting with different constructions, fabrics and techniques. Every bag taught me something new, and every mistake helped me become a better bag maker.
As I gained confidence, I began modifying bags to suit my own needs. Before long, I found myself drafting my own designs.
One of those designs became the Be Hip.
Over the next two years, I sewed more than 100 Be Hip bags. Every bag was an opportunity to improve the construction, refine the details and better understand what made a bag practical for everyday use.
Although I was already drafting my own bags, I wasn't ready to turn them into sewing patterns. The Be Hip was far more complex, and I simply didn't have the Illustrator skills to create pattern pieces and instructions that other makers could follow.
Looking back now, I realise those years were preparing me for what was to come.
Without sewing over 100 Be Hip bags, I don't think I would have had the confidence or experience to eventually create sewing patterns for others.

A Little Girl's Question Changed Everything
By 2021, something unexpected happened.
Like many parents during the COVID years, I was preparing Charlotte for school with all the daily essentials she needed - Singapore government-issued TraceTogether token, face mask, hand sanitiser and tissues.
To help keep everything organised, I designed a little Pollies Pocket holder for her. Soon, she wanted me to make them for her friends as well.
Then she innocently asked,
"Mama, why don't you teach their mummies how to make them?"
That simple question planted a seed.
For the first time, I wondered...
"What if I created my own sewing patterns?"
Instead of waiting for someone else to draft my ideas, I enrolled in two days of Illustrator lessons.
Those lessons barely scratched the surface.
Once again...
YouTube became my teacher.
Illustrator became countless hours of trial and error.
Slowly, I learned how to turn an idea into pattern pieces, illustrations and instructions that other makers could confidently follow.
Pollies Pocket became my very first sewing pattern.
Looking back now, that little pattern wasn't just another project.
It was the beginning of Sewfisticated Craft Designs.

The Birth of Sewfisticated Craft Designs
I never started this journey thinking,
"One day I'll become a pattern designer."
I simply loved beautiful, practical bags.
After releasing Pollies Pocket Holder, something changed.
I realised how much I enjoyed not only creating bags, but also teaching others how to make them.
One pattern became another.
Then another.
Before I knew it, Sewfisticated Craft Designs was born.
Looking back today, it still feels surreal.
What started with one confused beginner, a seam ripper and plenty of determination has grown into more than 50 sewing patterns, covering everything from wallets and organisers to backpacks, travel bags and everyday carry solutions.
Behind every finished pattern are countless hours of sketching, drafting, sewing, testing, revising and sometimes starting all over again.
Every pattern carries a little piece of the lessons I learned along the way.

One Journey Led to Another
As I designed more patterns, I also found myself searching for better fabrics, stabilisers, hardware and materials that would complement them.
I wanted products that worked the way I imagined they should.
That search eventually grew into Sewfisticated Supplies.
Although Sewfisticated Craft Designs and Sewfisticated Supplies now have their own websites, they were both born from the same passion - to make bag making easier, more enjoyable and more accessible for makers around the world.

The Greatest Reward
As much as I enjoy designing, releasing a new pattern has never been the greatest reward.
The greatest reward has always been seeing what you create.
Watching makers customise pockets, resize bags, add new features and truly make each design their own never gets old.
Some of you have even built small businesses using Sewfisticated patterns.
Seeing your creativity reminds me why I started this journey in the first place.
Sewfisticated has never been a one-person journey.
To every tester, video creator, sew-along host, moderator, striker and every member of our wonderful community...

Somehow, while I was building Sewfisticated, she was quietly growing up too.
Today, she has blossomed into a creative young lady with dreams of her own. She now sews alongside me, proudly carries many of the bags we make together and has become one of my biggest supporters. While my passion led me to sewing and designing, hers has blossomed into art, and watching her creativity flourish has been one of the greatest joys of this journey.
There have been moments when our paths crossed beautifully. During the COVID years, a simple project I made for her sparked an idea that eventually led me to designing my own sewing patterns. More recently, she proudly sewed her own Versa Tote and even inspired a few ideas along the way.
Looking back, I realise Sewfisticated didn't just grow as a business.
It grew alongside Charlotte.
As she reached each milestone, so did this little dream that started from one sewing course, countless YouTube tutorials and more than 30 unpicked zipper pouches.
Watching her grow into the young lady she is today has been my greatest achievement of all.
I hope that one day, when she looks back on this journey, she'll know that dreams don't begin with knowing everything.
They begin with taking that very first step.

Looking back, I realise this journey was never really about sewing.
It was about having the courage to begin before I felt ready.
It was about learning one mistake at a time.
It was about believing that even if I didn't know the answer today, I could learn it tomorrow.
